OUR HISTORY image
The Stamford Bridge Sports Hall Association Ltd. was first registered in 1983 as a ‘not for profit, limited by Guarantee company’. The closure of the Beverley to York railway line in 1965 followed by some years of neglect had seen the old station buildings falling into a state of disrepair. With the population of the village growing, a group of dedicated Stamford Bridge residents saw an opportunity to make use of the large goods shed (warehouse) located at the end of the station yard by converting it into an indoor sports facility. Following a great deal of effort by volunteers in clearing the site, fundraising and obtaining loans and grants etc. the facility became a reality and the Stamford Bridge Sports Hall was officially opened to the residents in 1985. The hall may be hired by the Old Station Club members for the playing of indoor football, badminton, basketball and other suitable activities.
Work was then started on the Station House itself to convert part of this into a ‘Members Only’ Social Club known as ‘The Old Station Club’, the revenue from which, being used towards the upkeep of the Sports Hall and The Old Station Building. This building has been extended over the years to arrive at the building seen today.
Both buildings are owned by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and are leased to the Association. As part of the lease the hall must be available, for use in the afternoons by the Stamford Bridge Schools. Free of charge.
